How to pick the perfect photo

The better the photo, the more your portrait looks like them. You don't need a special camera. A phone photo with good light works beautifully.

1

Get down to their level

Hold the phone at your pet's eye level, about an arm's length away. Their face should fill a good part of the frame.

2

Use soft daylight

Stand near a window or step outside on a bright day. Skip the flash and avoid dark rooms.

3

Show the whole face

Both eyes, the nose, and both ears in view and in focus. Nothing covering the face.

A sharp eye level photo of a dog in soft daylight
✓ Great photo

This is what we love to receive

  • Sharp and in focus, especially the eyes
  • Taken at eye level, not from above
  • Soft natural light, no flash
  • Head, both ears, and the chest in the frame
  • The original photo from your phone, not a screenshot
✕ Try to avoid

Photos that make it harder

We can still work with many photos, but these make the result less like your pet.

Blurry photo of a dog
Blurry or movingWait for a calm moment and tap the screen to focus on the eyes.
Dark photo of a dog
Too darkDim light hides fur color and markings. Move closer to a window.
Dog far away in a backyard
Too far awayIf the face is tiny, we can't see the details that make them unique.
Dog photographed from above
Shot from aboveLooking down changes the shape of the face. Kneel down instead.
Dog face partly covered by a hand and a toy
Face covered or cut offHands, toys, or the edge of the frame should not cover the face or ears.

A few more tips

More than one pet?

Upload a separate photo of each pet. They don't need to be in the same picture. We bring them together in one portrait.

Memorial portraits

Older photos are fine. Choose the clearest one you have. If some details are hard to see, tell us about them when you reply to your proof.

Not sure about your photo?

Order as usual. If the photo won't give a good result, we'll tell you when we send your proof, before anything is printed.
